Grolier Poetry Festival June 2, 2018 Reading, Workshop & Performance
It was a day that poetry poured out of the old Grolier Poetry Bookshop and filled Plympton Street with new and vibrant sounds. Celebrating its 90th anniversary, the bookshop held the Grolier Poetry Festival, a day full of readings by great poets like Kathleen Spivack, David Ferry, Lloyd Schwartz, Gail Mazur, Sajed Kamal, XJ Kennedy, Kevin McLellan and Ruth Lepson. I was honored to perform in the festival alongside these strong voices that mean so much to the art of poetry today. The outdoor stage also showcased musicians and dancers. It rained in pockets, the sudden showers typical of New England spring, but people kept reading and playing music, and listening. The harpist Audrey Harrer and I (seen below) almost performed under a tree that provided shelter from the rain, but the kind stage manager, James Fraser, offered to hold umbrellas during our performance. You can see a segment of our performance in the videoclip. Afterwards, I gave a writing workshop inside the poetry bookshop on writing credos, using the book I edited with Rita BanerjeeCREDO: An Anthology of Manifestos & Sourcebook for Creative Writing. In all, there were about 15 attendees of the workshop, and I was inspired by the energy everyone was sharing to create, write, tell stories, proclaim their truth, etc. In the evening, I had the privilege to perform with my longtime partner and collaborator, Dennis Shafer as part of Sounds in Bloom.
